We will have guitar technique workshops led by two International Guitar Champions – Helen Avakian and Muriel Anderson!

Please note that these workshops are on FRIDAY JULY 26!

3:00 Helen Avakian, 2014 International Fingerstyle Champion – Transform Stage Fright to Stage Excitement
Helen will share performance tips and exercises that helped her win the 2014 title and charm audiences on stages across the country. Participants will perform for each other during this workshop.

4:30 Muriel Anderson, 1989 International Fingerstyle Champion – Travis Picking the way Travis picked (easy-intermediate)
Play Travis-style guitar the way Merle Travis actually played. Based on Muriel’s new “Take 5 Travis” course, she covers the unique and rarely taught stylistic details that gives Merle Travis’s music its charm. Will teach easy arrangements of “Nine Pound Hammer,” “I Am A Pilgrim” or other signature Travis tunes. Includes a free set of signature GHS strings for each participant.

    Muriel Anderson International Champion

    MURIEL ANDERSON is one of the world’s foremost fingerstyle guitarists and harp-guitarists, Muriel Anderson’s obvious joy of music, humor and her facility across the genres of folk, classical, bluegrass, popular and international music is revered by guitarists worldwide. An engaging performer, Muriel’s unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Japanese koto, then a Bluegrass band, one minute launching into a Beatles’ tune and the next, a Spanish classic.

  • Helen Avakian
    Helen Avakian International Champion

    Helen Avakian is an award winning singer/songwriter/guitarist based in Madison, Wisconsin, formerly of the Hudson Valley in New York, where she was a beloved performer, recording artist, and teacher for many years. In September 2014 Helen won the International Fingerstyle Championship also at the Walnut Valley Festival. She is the first female to do so since the championship became international in 2004, and the second female to ever win this prestigious contest that started in 1979 and draws virtuoso guitarists from around the world. (The first lady winner was Muriel Anderson 25 years prior in 1989 when the contest was called the National Fingerstyle Championship.)
